MiniDspNode: MSP430 + Nordic

This wonderful baby is a tiny sensor node based on the MSP430 TI family chip with a lovely Nordic transceiver.

The combination of MSP430F2011-NRF24L01+ makes it a perfect candidate for low power sensors or RFID application in indoor or outdoor.

MSP430:

  • Low Supply Voltage Range 1.8 V to 3.6 V
  • Ultra-Low Power Consumption
  • Active Mode: 220 µA at 1 MHz, 2.2 V
  • Standby Mode: 0.5 µA
  • Off Mode (RAM Retention): 0.1 µA

Nordic RF:

  • Minimum Supply voltage 1.9 V to 3.6V
  • Supply current in Power Down mode 900nA

    What is the price of the board?
    Is it open source?
    Does it work in broadcast mode or ACK mode?
    If in broadcast, what is the refresh rate?
    Does it support inter-node transfers?

      Hello,
      the board is on sale on the shop for 9.50 pounds.
      Yes it can work in broadcast mode (just set the same address and include the sender in the payload ) and you can enable automatic acknowledges.
      The maximum bit rate is 2 Mbps called “Enhanced Shockburst Mode” from Nordic.
      It does not support meshed network architectures but I’m implementing a simple store and forward mechanism in my spare time,
      so that you can build a sort of meshed network with dynamic routing.

      You are damn right man!
      Actually I was designing something similar but got lost in other stuff.
      This was also another design I like with an avr
      AVRNordic
      with lots of GPIO but 5V logic and no battery holder which actually will be quite big.
      I will certainly contact you when I have the new schematics.

      We have the first version of the full IO sensor node with an RFM12B and a MSP430G chip, there’s a long discussion here . I will let you know when the first boards become available.

        I like the idea of separate power board as that gives more flexibility. Let me elaborate :-)

        We’re in the process of building a new house and this is a great time to think about putting in automation. One of the things we’ll do is automatic lighting control (overhead light and floor LED strip lighting). For the floor strip light, we’d obviously a full-time power supply source for this. However, the control logic (CPU-based PWM) will still need significant supply of power on a long-term basis. It would be very convenient to have battery module (lipo with charging circuit) on removable board that is attached via header pins. I can probably design the power board myself, or maybe use off-the-shelf lipo chargers from Seeed. Would be nicer if it’s all-in-one board with mini lipo module :-)

        I’ll probably have to look at level translator like this SN74LVC4245A to go from 3.3v logic level to the 5v required by the LED strips.

          Yes I got the idea, there are plenty of chips for LED strip control. I saw one recently with 128 channel mode.
          I suppose you want to use the wireless module to control the LED color/intensity.
          What are you going to choose for that?
